Post 6: Effects of Music to Old People

Does old people need to listen music? I think its yes, not because they are old it does not mean they do not need music anymore. Even if they are old, they can still listen and love a music because I believe that, if what is the effects of the music to the children and adolescents, it is also the effect for the old people. I noticed it from my father that everytime he is in the house and doing his paper works, I can hear music. I think old people when they listen to music, their mind and body are also relax and they are enjoyed the things they do. But when I researched from the internet, I found out that they are other benefits for old people when they listen to music.

The article entitled "Music Therapy & Older Adults Fact Sheet" by Julie Guy, an MT-BC and Angela Neve, an MT-BC in the site "The Music Therapy Center of California". The author indicate the variety of aging related physical, mental, and emotional changes, which is the cause of life threatening illness. These illnesses affects our organic brain syndrome, damaged from a cardiovascular accident or person has a disorder influencing the central nervous system and musculoskeletal system, or person that has a memory related disorder. All of these illnesses occur from growing older.

Written in the article, how can music therapy address the need areas for an older adult? In The Americans Act of 1992, they provide of music therapy. This act help old people to accomplish the restoration, maintenance, and improvement of social or emotional functioning, mental processing or physical health of an older individual the use of rhythmic or musical instrument and specifically selected by a music therapist. Music therapy can also help the communication skills of an older adults. It can maintain his or her own speech and language skills in terms of communication, phonemic awareness, motor planning, choice making, speech intelligibility, oral motor, answering questions, sequencing, and patterns of language.

Music therapy also help to maintain memory organization and the processing of mind. Reality Orientation is one of the technique of the therapist do. It can help them to exercise their mind and to remember things like date, names of people, place of residence and a lot more. If we include dancing, they can maintain their endurance, strength, and flexibility of their body. In the Social, it can help their emotional by company of their love ones and listening and enjoying together with music.

The second article entitled "Music Therapy and the Elderly" by Dr. T V Sairam in  the site "Ayurveda For You". Written in the article that music is nascent discipline in India and the impact of music to us is natural and it is very important because music is also good in our daily lives. With the help of music therapy, old people can gain many benefits from listening music. The author said that having a music therapy, the patient can brings huge variety to established treatment routines. He also said that not only the patients are getting the benefits from music therapy but also the role players, namely the therapist and nurses. I think, it is because of the conversations and reactions of the two person and they can learn new things from each other.

In their research taken up by Salminen in 1990, he found out that many of old people are very interested of music. Why is it old people very interested in music even though a lot of them have weakened hearing or other old age problems? The article said that through music, it is possible that the mind of the patient will be sharp even before. Also they can connect fulfilling experiences to one's earlier life events and they can express their feelings by listening to music.

So, old people must have to listen music everyday to have some of these benefits and it can help their physical health. Moreover, not only physical health but also it can help them to socialize with other people and music can help to sharpened our mind. The two articles are quite similar because they telling us the same information that music is part of our life and music gives us happiness and other expression. My advice is do not let go or hate music, but instead love and embrace it for the happiness of your future.
